Things to do at Athabasca Falls

Athabasca Falls drops only about 24 metres, but the river forces its full volume through a narrow quartzite canyon, and the compression is what makes the roar and spray worth the stop. It sits on the Icefields Parkway roughly 30 km south of Jasper townsite and about 150 km north of the Columbia Icefield, an easy detour on the drive between the two.

Parking is right beside the falls, with paved paths and viewing platforms reaching the main lookout in under five minutes, no real climb involved. Because the stop takes so little time, tour buses and self-drive traffic both pile in through summer, so a car park that looks full at midday can empty out by early evening.

Surfaces near the water stay wet and slick even in dry weather, and people have died here climbing past the railings for a closer photo — keep to the marked paths and barriers.
