Things to do at Abraham Lake & the ice bubbles

Abraham Lake sits on the David Thompson Highway (Highway 11), about 3 hours from Banff and well outside Banff, Jasper, Yoho and Kootenay, so no Parks Canada pass is needed here.

The reservoir's famous methane ice bubbles are a narrow-window event, roughly mid-January to mid-February, when the ice is clear enough to see through but thick enough to hold weight, and conditions shift year to year depending on cold snaps, snowfall and wind polishing the surface.

This is a dedicated trip, not a stop tacked onto a Glacier Parkway day, and driving out and back in a day means around 6 hours behind the wheel. Winter temperatures on this stretch regularly drop to -20 degrees Celsius with strong westerly wind, and the lake ice near bubble clusters can be unpredictable, so check current conditions before walking out.
